Springtime is a time for new beginnings, spring cleaning symbolizes a transition from colder months to a warm, tranquil season. Every corner, nook and cranny should be given special attention; ridding your space from winter’s dirt and dust before allergy season is in full swing. Make it a positive process.
Spring cleaning covers areas that aren’t normally cleaned in a weekly or monthly routine. It offers a healthy home and should be done annually.
First, create your schedule, do not try to spring clean in a day. This specialized cleaning should take multiple days, maybe even a week or more. You need extra time for the more involved projects like organizing closets, your pantry, and of course that ‘junk drawer’.
Ideas for a more detailed cleaning in each room in your home:
Kitchens and Laundry Areas
- Clean oven.
- Clean inside the refrigerator and dust coils.
- Clean small appliances (like microwave, dishwasher).
- Clean out and organize pantry.
- Wipe the front of cabinets and knobs.
- Clean dryer vent.
- Clean washing machine.
- Sweep and mop floors (or steam clean floors to remove excess grime or grease).
Bathrooms
- Deep clean shower and bathtub (clean grout & reseal if necessary)
- Wash bathmats.
- Deep clean toilets and sinks.
- Replace or wash shower liners.
- Sweep and mop floors (or steam clean which helps in sanitizing the area)
Bedrooms
- Wash ALL bedding, including mattress pads.
- Wash or replace pillows.
- Mattress (sprinkle mattress with baking soda, then vacuum, spray with disinfectant) The baking soda absorbs any odors that may be in the mattress and vacuuming can help with removing dust mites.
- Clean under bed.
- Vacuum or sweep, then mop floors (use appropriate cleaners depending on what type flooring you have (vinyl, tile, wood, etc).
Additional items or areas:
- Dust (which seems like a never-ending task). Begin from top of the room to bottom since the dust will settle on the floors.
- Don’t forget the ceiling fans, light fixtures, windowsills, books, knick-knacks, blinds and draperies.
- Be sure that light bulbs have been turned off and are cool before wiping them down. Dust the lamp shades with a dampened microfiber cloth.
- Don’t forget the ceiling fans, light fixtures, windowsills, books, knick-knacks, blinds and draperies.
- Depending on what type of blinds you have, check the manufacturer’s suggestions for cleaning. You can use a soft, clean cloth with mild soap and water to clean faux wood, aluminum or vinyl blinds. Pay special attention when cleaning Roman shades or real wood blinds; never use water on real wood blinds.
- Leave slats open until they’ve completely dried.

- Wipe walls and ceilings to remove any grime, grease, cobwebs and dust.
- Clean baseboards, vacuuming first, then wiping with an all-purpose cleaner using a microfiber cloth
Other Items to Consider During the Spring-Cleaning Process
- Wash area rugs and shampoo carpets.
- Clean windows (inside and out), wash window screens, scrub with a brush and then rinse thoroughly with water, let dry and reinstall.
- Take fabric pillows and cushions outside & gently beat them by hand to remove unwanted dust. Vacuum upholstery with the crevice tool, be sure to vacuum under the cushions.
**Be sure to check the batteries in your smoke detectors (this should be done twice a year), also make sure they are free of dust.
Finally, a clean home translates into a healthier living environment. It’s not just about appearance; it is a crucial step in maintaining well-being.
